Bridging Cultures. Building Financial Futures. Empowering Communities.

Veronica Ouya is not easy to fit into a single title, and that is precisely the point. She is a certified healthcare interpreter, an accredited financial counselor, a published academic, a professor, a community leader, and a passionate advocate for the dignity of every person she serves. Her life's work sits at the intersection of language, culture, health, and economic empowerment — and for over a decade, she has brought that work to bear on some of the most underserved and overlooked communities in the United States and beyond.
Who She Is
Veronica holds a Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from Iowa State University, where she also earned a Master of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences with a specialization in Family Financial Planning. Her academic foundation spans three continents — she began her graduate journey with a Master of Arts in Communication Studies from the University of Nairobi — and that global perspective infuses everything she does.
She currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of Communication and Business at Des Moines Area Community College, a role she has held since 2014, shaping the next generation of communicators, professionals, and community contributors.
Her scholarly contributions extend to peer-reviewed research. Her 2025 article, "Examining the Role of Social Media and Imagined Communities in Addressing Social Welfare Gaps in Kenya," published in Social Media + Society, reflects her deep commitment to understanding how communication and community intersect to drive social change.
Her Credentials
Veronica brings a rare combination of professional certifications that speak to both the depth and breadth of her expertise:
- Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC®) — Credentialed through the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE®), she is trained and certified to help individuals and families build financial stability and long-term well-being. She is not an accountant or tax professional — her focus is on financial counseling: guiding clients toward clarity, confidence, and control over their financial lives.
- Certified Healthcare Interpreter — Credentialed through the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI), she meets the highest national standard for professional healthcare interpreting, ensuring that patients who speak other languages receive accurate, dignified, and culturally responsive care
Her Community Presence
Veronica is not merely a credentialed professional — she is a deeply embedded community servant whose civic contributions reflect her values.
She served as a Commissioner on the Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission from 2018 to 2024, working to uphold civil rights and human dignity at the municipal level. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Interpreters and Translators Association, contributing to the professional development and standards of the interpreting and translation field statewide. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Refugee Alliance of Central Iowa, an organization dedicated to supporting refugees and immigrants in rebuilding their lives with dignity.
Her commitment to financial empowerment in immigrant communities was recognized through a grant from the St. Catherine of Siena Foundation, which funded her project "Increasing Financial Knowledge and Ability (Kuongeza Maarifa na Uwezo wa Kifedha)" — a Swahili-English initiative designed to build financial literacy within East African immigrant communities in Des Moines.
Her Speaking Voice
Veronica is a sought-after speaker who brings warmth, scholarship, and lived experience to every platform she occupies. Her speaking topics reflect her conviction that faith, culture, health, and community are deeply intertwined.
She has spoken on:
- Immigrants, refugees, and chronic disease management — addressing the real-world health challenges facing displaced communities and the cultural dynamics that shape how care is received and delivered.
- Cultural humility — most recently delivering a session on this topic in May 2026, equipping audiences to move beyond tolerance toward genuine respect and responsiveness across cultural difference.
- Family faith formation — including presentations at St. Ambrose Cathedral, where she has engaged faith communities on building intentional, values-centered family life.
- Christian faith and community — drawing on a long history of speaking in church settings, Veronica brings a thoughtful, grounded perspective on living faith publicly and purposefully.
Most recently, Veronica presented at the Iowa Interpreters and Translators Association 18th Annual Conference (Grand View Student Center, Des Moines — May 30, 2026), further cementing her standing as a leading voice in the professional interpreting community.
Her Mission
At the heart of everything Veronica does is a single, uncompromising conviction: every person deserves to be understood — in their language, in their culture, and in their financial and personal circumstances.
She works with immigrants and long-term residents, with healthcare institutions and individual families, with faith communities and professional organizations. Her approach is always the same: rigorous in preparation, generous in spirit, and relentless in pursuit of equity.
Whether she is counseling a family navigating financial hardship, interpreting for a patient in a critical healthcare moment, training a new generation of certified interpreters, or standing at a podium to speak truth into a community — Veronica Ouya shows up with her whole self.
Welcome. You are in good hands.
